Mitchell Homes is a family-owned custom home builder based in Midlothian, Virginia, that has built stick-built homes on customers' own land since 1992. The company holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, a Best of Houzz award for customer service, and builder licenses in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Maryland. Each credential comes from an outside organization and links to a place where you can check it.
Credentials last reviewed: October 2026
Rating: A+ in Virginia and in North Carolina
Accredited in Virginia: Since January 1994
Accredited in North Carolina: Since September 2019
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) grades businesses on a scale from A+, its highest grade, down to F. BBB bases the grade on a business's complaint history, how it responds to complaints, how open it is about its practices, and any licensing issues or government action on record. Customer reviews do not count toward the grade.
BBB accreditation is voluntary and separate from the letter grade. An accredited business commits to BBB's Standards for Trust and pays annual dues. BBB publishes profiles for accredited and non-accredited businesses alike. You can check both of Mitchell's profiles on BBB's site: Virginia and North Carolina.
Mitchell Homes holds builder licenses in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, and is a registered home builder in Maryland, where the state registers builders rather than licensing them. You can check each number with the state agency that issued it.
| State | Credential | Number | Issued by | What the state requires |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Virginia | Contractor license | 2705019197 | Virginia Board for Contractors | Virginia requires a license from its Board for Contractors for home construction. |
| North Carolina | General contractor license, unlimited | 76127 | North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors | An unlimited license carries no cap on the value of a single project. North Carolina's board checks a company's finances before issuing one. |
| South Carolina | Residential builder license | RBC 1071 | South Carolina Residential Builders Commission | South Carolina requires a residential builder license for any residential construction job over $5,000, and applicants must have their experience verified and pass a state exam. |
| Maryland | Home builder registration | MHBR No. 7403 | Maryland Home Builder Registration Unit | Maryland requires home builders, with limited exceptions, to register with the state before contracting to build a new home, and to show the registration number in their ads. |
Award: Best of Houzz 2023, Service category
Houzz is a home design and remodeling site with a community of about 70 million homeowners and design enthusiasts. Houzz announces its Best of Houzz awards early each year. The Service award is based on a professional's Houzz rating and client reviews. Houzz considers every professional with a profile automatically and at no cost, so a business cannot buy the award. Just over 2 percent of the more than 3 million professionals on Houzz receive the Service award.
Presented: November 2024
In November 2024, Mitchell Homes received the 2024 Commitment to Excellence award from one of its technology partners at that company's annual customer conference. The partner chose Mitchell from among the home builders it works with. Unlike the BBB rating and the state licenses above, this award comes from a company that knows Mitchell's work firsthand rather than from an independent body.

Mitchell Homes builds in more than 150 counties, cities, and towns across four states. Through SimplyMitchell, qualified landowners can build with zero down, zero closing costs, and no construction loans. Mitchell's goal is to finish each home in 150 days or less.
When you build on your land, one company handles your permits and your construction. The licenses, the BBB record, and the warranty let you check that company before you sign. To hear from homeowners who have already built, read their testimonials.
A New Home Consultant can answer questions about any license or rating and can schedule a Discovery Tour at the design studio nearest your land.

If you are thinking about building your own home, go with Mitchell Homes! You will not be disappointed. My husband and I worked with Freddy and Angi to design our home and Joe Carbone was our construction manager. They literally made you feel like family! We got to watch the house go up from foundation to finishing and it is no easy task. Joe Carbone handled every little detail and made sure to keep us informed of how the build was going. Freddy and Angi would check in even just to say hi. They want you to be happy with the home you are building which is not something you will get with the cookie cutter developers. You get to personalize and customize your home. We chose the Deborah and couldn’t be happier. If you are building in the Wilmington/Raleigh NC area and you have the ability to work with Mitchel Homes and have Joe Carbone as your construction manager- TAKE IT! You will love your experience and your new home. Take it from us!!
